If you have seen any of the TV programs (especially on PBS) featuring barbershop choruses/quartets, you know that there are some outstanding singing groups within our society. Remember, these are men who do this as a hobby not as a group of professionals. Our chorus is dedicated to getting together as a group of men who enjoy singing four-party barbershop harmony. If you like to sing, we will put you in a chorus and help you learn how to fit your voice in tone of the four parts. We are lucky to have a competent new director who is dedicated to helping each member be the best they can be. Annual Shows Each year the chorus presents a two-hour musical stage show. Along with the Chorus, we always try to feature an ensemble of singers from the local area and a featured quartet, often flown in from out of town.Several chapter quartets get in on the act and entertain by singing one or more songs. The featured guest quartet presents a “show-within-the-show” that lasts about 30 minutes. Keep an eye out for show flyers in shops and store windows all around town around September of each year. Members Paul Phillip Betancourt Sean Devine Alex Rubin Michael Skutt Our History In the summer of 1965, four men – Earl Bittinger (lead), Bob Carthew (tenor), Dave Landis (baritone), and Gary Forry (bass) formed a quartet and began singing barbershop-style music in Hanover, PA. They soon decided to attempt to form a chorus and apply for a charter as a chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. So they sent letters to men in this area whom they thought might be interested in joining a chorus. About fifteen men attended a first meeting held at the Utz Potato Chip Co. pavilion in early October 1965. Formal meetings began on the first Monday of April, 1966. At that time, the first elected board of officers considered selecting a name for the chorus and decided to call the group “Chorus of Conewago”. On the first Monday of March 1967, the Executive Board members of The Hanover Chorus met with the Area V.P. of the Mid-Atlantic District, the Penn Dutch Area Counselor, and the President of the York Chapter to discuss the procedures for incorporating, licensing, and obtaining a charter as a chorus of the International Society. By February of 1968, the incorporation had been completed through the York County Court, and the formal application for a charter was sent to the International Society. The Chapter was formally presented at the first Annual Harvest of Harmony Barbershop Show on September 14, 1968. In 1973, the chapter membership voted to change the chapter’s name to the “Standardbred Chorus” because Hanover is well-known as the primary location for breeding standardbred horses. What a remarkable history, thanks to remaining charter members Don Myers and Dick Weaver plus all others who worked and cooperated to make it happen! Published on May 26, 2014 The sings at the Hanover Memorial Day Parade By: Mike Rubin Gimme Four Announcing our guest quartet for our 2015 annual show. Gimme Four is a barbershop quartet based in Caldwell, New Jersey. Paul, Dave, Will, and Joe have been singing together since 2011 L to R- Tenor: Paul Franek, Lead: David Ammirata, Bass: Will Downey, Baritone: Joe Servidio In their first year, they won the Rahway Valley Novice Quartet Championship and were named the 2012 Mid-Atlantic District Collegiate Champions. That summer, they competed at the 2012 International Collegiate Quartet Contest in Portland, Oregon, placing 8th. In 2013, they finished 6th at the same contest in Toronto. Later that year, they competed and placed 2nd at the 2013 Mid-Atlantic District Quartet Contest. They qualified to compete in the 2014 International Quartet Contest in Las Vegas, placing 40th, and took 3rd at the 2014 Mid-Atlantic District Quartet Contest. Thereafter, the quartet successfully qualified for the 2015 International Quartet Contest in Pittsburgh. At this contest, Gimme Four became an International Semifinalist, finishing 19th. The quartet is now hard at work preparing for District. Paul Franek just graduated from The College of New Jersey with a degree in Business. He is an avid barbershopper and presentation coach. David Ammirata went to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA and works as a video editor at a post production house. He is also the director of East Coast Sound, a barbershop harmony society chapter and youth chorus. Will Downey has a degree in music education from Ithaca College. He currently teaches violin and has a number of his own private students. Joe Servidio is currently attending Montclair State University. He is working full time and finishing his degree in Philosophy.
